Some Helpful Search Tips for Secondary Students:

 

  • Know the search engine that you are using.  A significant amount of websites are not even indexed by these major search engines.

  • Be aware of spyware, pop-ups and cookies (someone is always watching you).

  • It may be beneficial to use more than one search engine.

  • Consider your findings.  Not everything you find on the internet is true.

  • Some websites require you to purchase the information or pay before accessing their site.

  • Consider to yourself if it is actually possible to find what you are looking for on the internet.

  • Try to make sure that when you are "searching" that it doesn't turn into "surfing."

  • Don't waste time searching for information and hours later end up with nothing.

  • Search for sources not just information.

  • Try searching for using other keywords or phrases if your first search produces no results.

 

            Search Techniques for Students

1) Using upper and lower case letters will yield different results.
2) Use Boolean operators such as :
AND, OR, AND NOT, +, -.
3) Use modifiers such as date and subject to narrow search.
4) Broaden search to include different languages. Some pages allow for translation.
5) Put exact phrases in quotes to narrow search.
6)
CHECK SPELLING!
7) Avoid using stop words such as:
the, of, web, a, to, in, & is.
8) Try to use the most appropriate search engine for the topic.
9) Putting the key word first may yield better results.
10) Original words will give better results as opposed to common words that may find thousands of pages containing that word.
